KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) vice chancellor, Professor Dr Kasim Mansur said that graduates must be skilled in communication, information technology (IT) and excellent in their co-curriculum activities in order to be competitive in the job market today.

He said this when speaking at Maktab Sabah’s Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) 2010 graduation ceremony yesterday.

He also reminded them that they must also excel in their examinations in order to become first class human capital for the country.

“We need human capital who are capable in order to increase the country’s competitiveness in the global arena,” Kasim said.

He added that youths must be made aware of these needs so that they can move towards achieving them.

74 students took part in the graduation ceremony.

Kasim said the graduation ceremony would serve as an encouragement for students about to sit for the upcoming STPM examination scheduled to take place in November.

“They will be more prepared psychologically with the knowledge they have garnered to sit for the examination,” he said.

He urged the students about to sit for the exam to excel in it and move the school towards further excellence, adding that it was imperative upon them to excel in the examination before they could pursue their studies at institutes of higher learning.

Maktab Sabah attain a 97 per cent pass rate in the STPM examination last year as compared to only 95 per cent in 2009.

The school’s average grade rate was 2.33.
