S’wakians travelling by boats to vote reminded to travel safe

SIBU: The river transport operators and users were advised not to overlook their safety when travelling to places where river was the main conduit of travel, particularly during this election period.

Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said they wanted to ensure no untoward incidents happen on April 16, the polling day.

“Do check your boat before you start your journey. Do not carry too many passengers and follow the rules and regulations,” he said when met by reporters at the Marine Department headquarters for central region in Ding Lik Kong Road here yesterday.

This was because unlike in Peninsular Malaysia, river was still a main conduit of travel for Sarawakians in rural areas, he said.

He added their safety is as important as performing their duty as a responsible citizen on the polling day.

“So that everybody can cast their vote and arrive home safely,” he said.

He hoped that the boat tragedy in Tatau in October last year that killed 13 people serve as a good reminder to all.
