CONCRETE PLAN: Teng sets out his concrete development plan for Repok during the event.

SARIKEI: Incumbent Repok assemblyman Datuk David Teng has challenged his opponent Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Dr Wong Hua Seh to define ‘change’, which the latter wants to bring to Sarikei.

The Assistant Minister of Food Industries said Dr Wong should come up with a definite development plan for the constituency instead of just sounding the battle cry ‘ubah’ or ‘change’.

He told a crowd of about 1,000 at the Mutiara Food Court on Tuesday night that without any definition, the slogan was mere rhetoric.

“Changing political platforms by jumping from one party to another can also be defined as ‘change’.

“In politics those who change in that manner are called ‘frogs’,” said Teng, in reference to Dr Wong, who was Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) branch chairman before he changed his loyalties to DAP.

In the 2001 state election, Teng contested against Dr Wong, who was then the PKR candidate, and Wong Sing Ai from the DAP, to win by a 5,769-vote majority.

This time around, Teng said he was facing more than one ‘frog’, apparently in reference to Dr Wong and his former aide, who recently left the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) to join DAP.

On his development plan for Sarikei in the next five years if given the mandate, Teng listed five major
areas.

Topping the list is the realisation of the Sarikei-Tanjung Manis road link through Bukit Hwang, the opening of trading spaces at the Central Market, the construction of a hawker centre, a new low-cost housing scheme at Taman Susur Jambu and the modernisation of agricultural activities.

Teng stressed that his plan under the Barisan Nasional (BN) was realistic and would raise the standard of living for the people.
