TAMBUNAN: The KadazanDusun in Sabah have started their Harvest Festival (Kaamatan Festival) celebration at district and village levels.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said this festival is officially held from May 1.

He also said the Kaamatan is held annually to enable the KadazanDusun in the interior areas to be with their families in their respective villages.

“The annual Kaamatan celebration is an effort to continue this culture and tradition,” he said, adding that this celebration is also to remind the Kadazandusun of their roots.

Pairin said this when officiating at the Kaamatan celebration in Kampung Monsorulung in Tambunan yesterday.

Pairin, who is also the Sabah Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) president said, as in previous years, its purpose is to promote its culture together with events such as the Sugandoi (singing competition), Unduk Ngadau (beauty pageant) and also cultural and agricultural exhibitions.

“I hope all Kadazandusun will use their own traditional costumes to show that we are proud of our culture and the uniqueness of our tradition.”

He also urged the younger generation to actively participate in this celebration as with them the celebration would be more cheerful and they could also see their own tradition when celebrating the Kaamatan.
