KOTA KINABALU: The Institute of Engineering Malaysia Sabah (IEMS) has proposed several measures to the Kota Kinabalu City Hall to address the flood problem here.

It suggested the existing drainage system be upgraded and connected to the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) monsoon drain.

In line with the understanding of the Institute of Engineering Malaysia (IEM) and Malaysian Institute of Architects, IEM also proposed to Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir during a courtesy call yesterday that engineers be allowed to submit development plans, which is presently done only by architects.

It was also suggested that old buildings in the City should have a structural integrity checks by professional engineers to ensure public safety, which according to them has been in practice in other cities.

IEM Sabah branch chairman Ir Teo Chee Kong raised the flooding problem in the city when he led 11 members comprising executive committee from the IEMS, Association of Consultant Engineers Malaysia (ACEMS) and the Sabah Engineers Association (SEA) to call on the mayor.

It was suggested that as most floodings were due to tidal effects, the City Hall and the DID should work together on the matter.

On the traffic congestion issue, the group said an integrated approach was needed to address the problem in the long run.

Among those present were ACEM branch chairman IrLo Chong Chiun and SEA president Ir Lee Tet Fon.
