Sultan of Perak confers title on AirAsia CEO

HONOURED: Fernandes says he is honoured to receive the award and dedicated it to all the years of hard work and commitment of the team at AirAsia.

KUCHING: AirAsia Group (AirAsia) chief executive officer Dato’ Sri Dr Tony Fernandes CBE was amongst the list of award recipients for the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah’s 83rd birthday yesterday.

According to a press release, Fernandes was conferred Seri Paduka Mahkota Perak (SPMP) which carried the title Dato’ Seri at the Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar.

Fernandes said he was humbled to receive the award and dedicated it to all the years of hard work and commitment of the team at AirAsia.

Under his leadership, AirAsia has grown into a world-class and innovative brand with its revolutionary low fares, premium products and high quality services.

After taking over the then struggling airline in late 2001, Fernandes and his management developed the airline which has now flown over 100 million guests and linking cities across Asia Pacific.

AirAsia served the underserved, supported in opening-up the certain markets to the world, boosted the trade and tourism industry, generated economy, provided careers to the rakyat and made countless dreams come true.

From a fleet of two aircraft, one destination and staff of 250, AirAsia now operates a fleet of 102 aircraft, 150 routes to 78 destinations and a staff of 8,000.

The airline has also invested millions of dollars in quality improvement measures that included the running of its world-class training centre, the AirAsia Academy, which implements training to ensure high quality service and supported new knowledge acquisition.
