SANDAKAN: Two policemen were injured, one seriously, while trying to detain a knife-wielding suspect who was involved in extortion, at Kampung Sentosa Jaya Batu 3 near here on Tuesday.
Muhammad Hida Syaffiq Aziz, 20, a police constable was stabbed in his body by the suspect, believed to be a drug addict, during a scuffle at about 12.45am while Lance Corporal Hadi Hassan, 31, suffered a cut in his palm.
Sandakan police chief ACP Rowell Marong said Muhammad Hida was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan and his condition reported stable while Hadi received outpatient treatment.
He said Muhammad Hida, Hadi and two other policemen had been assigned to investigate an attempt by suspects to extort money at Batu 3 and Batu 4 villages.
Upon arriving at the scene and identifying themselves as police, the two suspects started fleeing the place and during the ensuing chase, one suspect used a knife to attack two policemen who tried to detain him, he said.
