LABUAN: Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan fully supports a proposal to set up a Kadazandusun-Murut (KDM) village in Labuan due the increase in the number of the community on the island.

The Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) president said the establishment of the village was in line with the 1Malaysia concept.

“If there is land, we must allocate. There is nothing wrong with that. It is a 1Malaysia concept,” he said when asked to comment on the community’s request to have its own village on the island.

Pairin said he was prepared to meet Labuan Member of Parliament Datuk Yussof Mahal to further discuss the issue.

Yussof told Bernama that efforts were underway to create a new village for the Kadazandusun and Murut community in Labuan, adding that the matter would be brought up to the federal territories and urban wellbeing ministry for approval soon.

There are about 5,000 Kadazandusuns and Muruts on the island but living in scattered areas. The Labuan Kadazandusun Murut Association has requested that a cultural village, or at least a new village, be set up for the community. — Bernama
