KOTA KINABALU: A total of 200,000 Teachers’ Day cards will be distributed to more than 1,200 schools in Sabah in conjunction with the event on May 16.

Sabah Chinese School Teachers Association chairman Datuk Eng Thiam Leong said the cards were selected from the outstanding winners in the hand and computer Teachers’ Day drawing contest in primary and secondary schools.

The event is in its sixth year running.

“We used 43 artistic works this year to print 22 types of Teachers’ Day cards,” he said during the launch by Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Resource Development and Information Technology Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai here yesterday.

The printing of the cards was sponsored by the chief executive officer of Eduspec Holdings Bhd, Lim Een Hong.

He added that the cards would be distributed to primary and secondary schools, as well as colleges, and the schools are expected to receive the cards over the next few days.

Eng, who is also the Sabah Chinese Primary School Principals Association chairman, revealed that the organising committee will expand the Teachers’ Day card drawing contest to kindergartens next year.

“To us, children under seven years old have their special ways to express their message,” he explained.

Eng hoped that the Teachers’ Day cards will remind students and the public of the contribution of teachers in education, and to encourage people to respect teachers.

Meanwhile, Yee said the cards are distributed free to the schools, while the schools are welcome to sell the cards to students or the public.

“Normally schools charge RM1 for each card and the amount raised will go towards the activities and welfare of the school,” he said.

Also present were the permanent secretary to the Resource Development and Information Technology Ministry, Bruno Vun and head of Kota Kinabalu Headmasters Council, Hambali Hj Shuib.
