KUCHING: Police are awaiting the result of a DNA test to confirm the identity of a woman whose charred body was discovered in Batu Kawah on May 8.

State CID chief SAC Huzir Mohamed said yesterday that police are pursuing several leads in the case, but have yet to ascertain who the body belong to.

“We have not confirmed the victim’s identity 100 per cent, and need to wait for the DNA test result to make sure,” he said when contacted by The Borneo Post.

The charred body was found in a bush near an abandoned building at Batu Kawah old bazaar last Sunday morning.

The matter came to light when nearby residents spotted several dogs fighting over what looked like part of a human leg.

This prompted two local Rela members to scour the area and make the grisly find.

In a related development, an Indonesian man showed up at Sarawak General Hospital mortuary yesterday to check if the body was that of his missing daughter.

The man, who identified himself only as Mahmud, arrived from across the border on Thursday, accompanied by his eldest daughter and son.

He said his 29-year-old daughter, Emi, had not been seen or heard from since May 6 when she sent a text message to her sister, saying she was on her way to Kuching for an unspecified reason.

Emi was employed at an entertainment outlet in Bau and lived in Jambusan.

Mahmud disclosed that his eldest daughter had lodged a police report in Bau over Emi’s disappearance.
