Indian government offers special scholarship programme for diaspora children

KUALA LUMPUR: The Indian government has announced a special scholarship programme for children of persons of Indian origin (PIO) and non-resident Indians (NRI) to pursue undergraduate professional and general courses in India.

The scholarship offers 75 per cent of the institutional economic cost (IEC) or US$3,600, whichever is less, that would include tuition fee, hostel fee and other institutional charges, except food charges, according to a statement from the Indian High Commission’s education section here yesterday.

It said scholarships were offered for undergraduate courses in engineering, architecture, technology, humanities, liberal arts, commerce, management, journalism, hotel management, agriculture/animal husbandry, sciences and law, among others. Medical and related courses are not included.

NRI candidates are eligible for the scholarship, only if their total family income does not exceed US$2,250 per month.

The guidelines and application forms could be downloaded from the education web-page of the high commission’s website www. indian high commission.com.my.

The forms are also available at the high commission’s education wing at No. 2, Jalan Taman Duta, off Jalan Duta in Kuala Lumpur. — Bernama
