Malaysian handicraft products to be displayed for sale at promotional event

MIRI: A variety of Malaysian handicraft products including the fashionable batik clothing and ceramic will be displayed for sale during the “Majlis Perlancaran Promosi Kraf Malaysia 2011” to be held for five days at Miri Heritage Centre commencing on May 20.

Chairing the meeting yesterday, organising chairlady, Councillor Kijan Toynbee disclosed that this year there were eighty participants from Kelantan, Selangor, Sabah, Terengganu, Malacca and Sarawak.

“We expect a huge crowd of visitors and locals during the five days promotion,” Kijan told The Borneo Post yesterday.

According to Kijan, Assistant Minister for Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin will officiate at the ceremony on May 20.

She disclosed that there would be eighty booths selling various handicraft products, modern Batik and ceramic during the function.

The function is organised by Miri City Council and assisted by Malaysia and Sarawak Handicraft Councils with the aim to encourage youths to take up handicraft and be interested to promote such cultural activities of Malaysia.

“Apart from the handicraft promotion, there will also be demonstration, workshop and craft education during the period,” Kijan disclosed. Kijan said about 200 guests would be present during the opening ceremony with highlight of the event themed “Kraf Menjana Ekonomi”.

Out of the eighty booths selling handicrafts, she said, eleven were from Kelantan, four from Selangor, three from Sabah, two from Terengganu, one from Malacca and the rest from Sarawak. She said prices of products during the promotion period are more reasonable and cheaper.

Elaborating further on the programme during the ceremony, Kijan said cultural performances, demonstrations of cultural products and handicrafts would be held.
