SIBU: The new system of promotion for teachers as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Monday is a positive effort in lifting the teaching profession to a new height.

Tamin assemblyman Joseph Mauh Ikeh said it was high time for the profession to be given a new lease of life in efforts to mould human capital that would suit the current employment requirement.

For this reason, Mauh who was a former teacher, said teachers must equip themselves with relevant and updated knowledge in all aspects.

“Today, the responsibility of a teacher is not only to educate but to impart relevant knowledge to students to face life challenges in the future,” he said.

He reminded teachers that expectations from students and their parents these days were quite different from what was expected from teachers of the past.

“Students these days are more exposed to a modern lifestyle,” he said.

Mauh also reminded teachers that their job was one that complemented the efforts of the nation towards achieving a developed nation status.

“Be proud of what you are doing,” he encouraged teachers.

On Monday, Najib announced that under the new promotion system, teachers will be categorised into four levels, namely regular teachers, senior teachers, high calibre teachers and teaching luminaries.

The new system takes effect on Jan 1 next year.
