KUALA LUMPUR: The road safety campaign lined-up for this year and next year will focus on young motorcyclists, aged between 16 and 25, in a bid to reduce road accident rate in the country.

Road Safety Department (RSD) director-general Datuk Suret Singh said this was because the group made up 50 per cent of those involved in road accidents last year.

“Last year, a total of 4,036 motorcyclists were involved in road accidents, about 40 to 50 per cent of whom aged 16-25,” he told reporters after signing a memorandum of understanding between RSD and Malaysia Scooter Club (MSC) at Berjaya Times Square yesterday.

Suret Singh said during the campaign, the RSD would stress on three major aspects, namely law enforcement, visibility on helmets or motorcycles, and the use of reflective jackets.

“Apart from that, we will also continue our campaign on the use of helmet because the campaign has been proven successful in reducing the death toll,” he said.

Suret Singh said the RSD had also set a target to reduce the road accident rate involving motorcyclists by between 100 and 200 cases for this year and next year. — Bernama
