SANDAKAN: The government has helped the community, especially those in the rural areas by expanding the opportunity available in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Sukau assemblyman Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman said the government, through the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), had  distributed various ICT facilities in the Kinabatangan area.

“Among the distribution were 2,000 units of the 1 Malaysia netbook to rural students, the establishment of four community broadband centres here at Pekan Kinabatangan, Bukit Garam, Sukau, and Paris 1 village. Besides that,  two other villages, namely Suan Lamba and Kampung Paris 3 were involved in Wifi facilities,” he said.

He said residents in the rural areas were now moving forward and would not be left behind with the existence of these facilities in their respective areas.

“The ICT facilities are  now available,” he said at the MCMC dinner in conjunction with the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2011, here at Mile 7, yesterday.

Also present were the director of MCMC (Sabah and Labuan region) Bukhari Yahya, deputy director of MCMC (Sandakan) Aaron Tan, and an officer of RTM (Sandakan), Francis Fahir.

Saddi, who is also the chairman of Koperasi Pembangunan Desa (KPD) said the usage of computers should not only be limited to ordinary work operation such as financial management, typing or to record account but more than that.

“Therefore, the medium of ICT such as websites, blogging and other social networking are beneficial to those who are engaged in business activities to introduce and expand their businesses globally,” he added.
