CYBERJAYA: Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim yesterday asked Telco companies to charge the minimum to rural people for the Wifi Village.

He said the present subscription of RM38 to RM48 a month for the wireless broadband service was too high for some people, especially in the rural areas.

The ministry will discuss with Telco companies ways to make the service affordable to many more people, he told reporters here after a conference on opportunities for small and medium industries through the ICT broadband.

In his speech, Rais said the household broadband penetration rate had reached 58 per cent.

He said the communication and multimedia industry recorded income of RM45.8 billion last year.

Rais said the industry had been buzzing about Digital Lifestyle Malaysia, the country’s approach to fostering innovation to develop projects based largely on Internet of Things or Network of Things.

He said the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission had allocated RM62.2 million for this year as seed funding for pilot ICT projects and Internet of Things applications. — Bernama
