LAWAS: The Lawas District Office wants the Public Works Department (PWD) to make sure that the slopes in all its development areas are safe from possible calamities, such as landslides.

District Officer Mohd Supaih Hamdan, who is also the district disaster relief and coordination committee chairman, said it was vital for PWD to be vigilant on the safety aspect as several projects here were being implemented on hill slopes and some of the contractors involved might have insufficient experience on slope cutting measures.

He said this when asked to comment on a recent landslide incident in Selangor which claimed the lives of 18 people from an orphanage home.

Supaih also urged the people to report any hill slope development or activities which were not under the purview of the government.

“This is important because lives could be at stake when something unfortunate should happen,” he cautioned.
