KOTA KINABALU: Miss Earth Sabah aims to educate the young girls in Sabah to create awareness not only for themselves but also their families and the community to be more serious in saving and protecting the environment.

Organizing chairperson Mandy Nandu is hoping the finalists would take the opportunity to learn as much as possible throughout the pageant week.

“This year, a total of 12 finalists will be taking part in 11 days of activities, namely a grooming session, talent show, introduction to the natural environment, seeding vegetables, tree planting, photo shoot, catwalk and dancing, eco-costume competition and many other activities with our sponsors.

“This year we will have four main titles and 11 subsidiary titles contributed by our sponsors. The top three will represent Sabah in the national level Miss Earth competition,” she said at a press conference at Novotel Hotel at 1 Borneo Hypermall yesterday.

Nandu added the participants this year would travel to Kudat for their environmental activities and she was confident that another beauty would be discovered in the beauty pageant to represent Malaysia at the international level.

To date, representatives from Sabah have made the state very proud by winning the national titles for two years  consecutively.

Nandu represented Malaysia in the world pageant at Boracay Islands in the Philippines in 2009 and Appey Rowenna repeated the victory in Nha Trang, Vietnam last year.

In fact, Nandu said the state’s three representatives last year who went to the national level pageant won most of the subsidiary titles.

The press conference yesterday was attended by assistant permanent secretary of the Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry, William Baya who represented its minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun.
