DBKU warns illegal parking attendants to stay out

KUCHING: Kuching City North Council (DBKU) has issued a stern warning to illegal parking attendants or ‘ulat’ operating under its jurisdiction.

It said its enforcement unit would not hesitate to arrest offenders and hand them over to the police to be charged under the law.

In the recent case where illegal parking attendants reared their heads during the Sure Heboh and Sarawak Cub Prix events at the Sarawak Stadium, DBKU was caught in a bind as the area was not under its jurisdiction.

Besides car parks, the illegal parking attendants also demanded parking fees from motorists who parked their cars at road shoulders along the yellow lines.

“As far  as  we (council) are concerned, during the event, we were there to ensure  the  cleanliness of the area and provide makeshift toilets for the public,” said a spokesperson from the council yesterday, pointing out that traffic flow was at the hands of the police.

Noting that the council cannot make arrest or issue compounds to illegal parking attendants there, DBKU hopes that the police will beef up their patrol in the area and deal with the ‘ulat’.

The spokesperson was also baffled as to why the stadium is the only place prone to these menacing ‘ulat’ who charge between RM2 and RM5 for cars and RM2 for motorcycles.

“So far, we have not received any reports of them operating at other areas such as the Kuching Waterfront or Padang Merdeka during  big events,” the spokesperson added.

To aid the police in arresting the illegal parking attendants, the council advises the public to make police reports and try to collect sufficient evidence such as parking receipts.

“The public may also call the police for assistance if the attendants get rowdy or threaten them,” said the spokesperson.
