George Lagong

KUCHING: Pelagus assemblyman George Lagong, who is the only independent to have won in the last state election, is keeping mum about which side he would be supporting in the coming State Legislative Assembly (DUN).

He said he had made a decision but “I will only cross the bridge when I come to it”.

“You’ll see during the coming DUN sitting,” he said in an interview with See Hua Daily yesterday.

Asked to comment on rumours that he had been approached by DAP and PKR, George declined to comment.

To another question, Lagong said he had been kept busy with his new responsibilities as an elected representative.

“I have been very busy with my daily routines.”

Technically, Lagong will be on the opposition side in the DUN but there were talks that he could be a BN-friendly independent after a precedent was set by Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong who is now in BN after being accepted into the SUPP.

In the last state election, BN won 55 of the 71 seats contested. Pakatan Rakyat (PR) took 15.

Pelagus, an Iban-majority area, saw Lagong winning by a 2,837 votes margin.

He garnered 5,740 votes to BN-PRS candidate Stanley Nyitar @ Unja Malang’s 2,903 and PKR candidate Edward Sumbang Asun’s 1,171.
