KUCHING: An elderly woman is in stable condition following a vicious street crime incident in which she was stabbed repeatedly and robbed in front of her house in Matang yesterday.
The 62-year-old victim from Kolong 4, near Taman Malihah, was plucking wild ferns about 100 feet away from her house around 11am when two unknown men ran up to her and tried to snatch her gold necklace.
When she resisted, one of the men whipped out a small knife and stabbed her four times in the left side of her chest, narrowly missing her vital organs, while his accomplice grabbed her necklace.
The robbers then sped away from the scene on a dark-coloured motorcycle, leaving the injured senior citizen lying on road.
Fortunately, a neighbour came out to check after hearing the commotion and immediately informed the victim’s daughter-in-law, who was at home but was unaware of what had happened, before helping to send the victim to the hospital.
The victim’s son, who lodged a police report after learning of the incident, said he was told that the robbers were initially loitering at the rear of his mother’s house — possibly with the intention of breaking in — but took off when her dogs started barking at them.
They were believed to have made their way to the front of the house and took the opportunity to strike when they encountered the old woman plucking ferns alone.
Following the incident, the victim was treated at the Sarawak General Hospital before being referred to the Sarawak Heart Institute in Samarahan for precautionary checks.
District police chief ACP Mun Kock Keong was unavailable for comment yesterday.
