HAPPY GAWAI: Abu Seman (centre), TR Gangga Kumbang and other residents jointly cut a cake to celebrate Gawai.

SIBU: The Iban community, especially the longhouse folk in Matu District, were yesterday urged to support the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the upcoming general election like they did in the April state polls.

Jemoreng assemblyman Abu Seman Jahwie said supporting the BN was akin to supporting the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“Ensure the Igan parliamentary seat will continue to be a BN stronghold. Don’t let the opposition gain a footing in Matu,” he appealed to the locals during at a Gawai Dayak gathering at Rumah Gangga, Matu.

Abu Seman, also a political secretary to the Chief Minister, said Ibans in the District should put aside whatever squabbles they had during the last state election.

“Gawai Dayak is the best time to forgive one another. Don’t let trivial matters become big issues and affect the harmony among the longhouse folk.

“Make use of this celebration to foster good relationships. It’s pointless for us to wear a sour face and be unfriendly towards one another,” he advised.

He also said the BN government which had proven its leadership mettle since Independence, was indisputably still the best for the people.

He advised the people not to listen to the rumours spread by the opposition in trying to run down the Barisan National to gain support or the upcoming general election.

“This had happened during the last state election but I’m happy to note that the Iban community in Matu District are far-sighted and smart in evaluating things and not be swayed by the opposition’s incitement.

“Thanks for your support,” he said.

Abu Seman also advised the younger Iban generation to preserve their rich cultures and traditions.

As future leaders, he added, the Iban youths should take pride in nurturing their love for their culture.

Earlier, the longhouse folk, led by chief Gangga Kumbang, gave Abu Seman a traditional welcome.
