KUCHING: Forty Environmental Health (EH) students from Masterskill College Kuching campus organised an exhibition yesterday to mark World Environment Day 2011.

The event aimed to educate their peers about caring for the environment and the need to continuously practise the 3Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle.

“At Masterskill, we believe that as a reputable higher learning institution, we have a big responsibility to play, by educating our students on the importance of recycling and ways to protect our environment,” said Masterskill Education Group chief executive officer/executive director Datuk Seri Edmund Santhara in a press statement.

“The world we live in is a gift from God, and therefore it is our shared responsibility to protect and preserve the environment.”

The exhibition, the first of its kind at the campus here, was supported by the Marketing and Student Affairs Departments.

“This is done for a good cause. What better way than to let the students themselves organise it as they are our future generation,” said assistant marketing manager Tony Tan.

There were booths showcasing experiments related to environmental studies, including soil and hydrology models, food labelling and a rainbow model to test the density theory.

“Among the duties of an EH officer are to check building structures, inspect food labels for nutrition and expiry dates, and more. The experiments are conducted by the students based on what they have learnt in their course and also their creativity,” said lecturer Julia Cliffton.

The students also planted trees to symbolically mark the World Environment Day 2011 celebration.

Masterskill Education Group offers programmes in healthcare, physiotherapy, medical lab technology, pharmacy, medicine, nursing, occupational safety and health, occupational therapy, child psychology, paramedic science (pre-hospital care), health informatics and medical imaging.
