KUCHING: Limkokwing Borneo will organise the inaugural Malaysia Film Festival tomorrow and Saturday (June 10-11) at its Jalan Nanas campus.

The festival aims to contribute towards the leveraging of the film industry and stir public interest in the art of cinematography and film making.

The first event of its kind organised by students of the Faculty of Communication, Media and Broadcasting is open to the public with an admission fee of RM3 for a one-day pass and RM4 for a two-day pass.

Limkokwing Borneo said in a press statement yesterday that highlights include talks, presentations and workshops by notable filmmakers and experts in the film and broadcasting industry.

The event is supported by the Association of Indonesia Students, National Film Department, hitz.fm Kuching, the Indonesia Consulate, National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) and Filem Negara.

The primary aim of the festival is to promote independent movies from Malaysia and Indonesia.

Pursuant to this, the festival will promote creativity and innovation in the film industry and act as a platform for participants to explore culture and diversity as a major component of film and television.

“To achieve our primary objective, we will be screening movies in addition to having educational workshops about the film industry.

“We aim to showcase at least eight independent and short movies from Malaysia and Indonesia,” said event coordinator Luciana De France.

De France, an international student from Indonesia currently undergoing her studies at the Faculty of Communication, Media and Broadcasting, hopes that this inaugural film festival will bring together young innovative thinkers who can contribute towards the industry and who can appreciate the cultural diversity of the two nations via the films produced.

Mass Communication lecturer Afida Khasuma Zaidi said the event will bring together like-minded individuals.

“This will be an ideal platform for everyone to experience the Malaysian and Indonesian cinematographic display of creativity and innovation.

“With the other activities planned for this event, participants will definitely have an insight into the development of the industry and the direction it is taking,” she said.

To introduce prospective students to career opportunities in the film industry, The Faculty of Communication, Media, and Broadcasting will conduct a free educational consultation session.

“At Limkokwing Borneo, we have always encouraged network building between our students and members of the industry as this will enable them to build the necessary career foundations with the media and society.

“This is an added advantage as once they graduate, they will have strong portfolios from the projects they undertake to prepare them for the real world,” said Afida.

Upon completing their Diploma in Mass Communication, students can opt to do their degree programme at Limkokwing University at Cyberjaya, or at any of the other Limkokwing campuses spread across three continents.
