BINTULU: A longhouse community was glad of the assistance rendered by the government to help them organise a river cleaning campaign.

Longhouse headman Bakat Imang was grateful to the government agency which provides monetary incentive to clean up their river.

“The allocation provided is consistent with the effort to clean and preserve the river as it is the only means of transportation and to cater the needs of the people,” he said.

Their longhouse in Ulu Kakus Tatau received RM2,000 allocation from the Sibu Drainage and Irrigation Department for the cleaning up of Kakus River.

With that provision, he said, about 50 residents involving members of the village security and development committee of Rumah Bakat Imang took part in the river cleaning campaign last June 2.

He expressed his appreciation for the provision as it is not only to maintain cleanliness but also maintaining the existing river nearby the longhouse in Ulu Kakus located over 120 km from Bintulu town.

Bakat also praised the government’s efforts to provide special provisions particularly for every longhouse to ensure the cleanliness of the river.

He said the residents welcomed such programme and the response was very encouraging for the purpose of preserving the river ecosystem and aquatic life for future generation to come.
