KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will introduce the rubbish bag system used in

Paris, France, to replace existing rubbish bins in public places.

Kuching South mayor James Chan said the bags would make it easier for the public to dispose of their rubbish properly.

“It is a small ring and a plastic bag on it and it will be put at the shopping complexes and road sides within MKBS areas.

“People can just walk (to it) and put their disposals into the bag as it will be provided at every corner and within reach,” he explained to reporters after the ‘Sesi Bersama Datuk Bandar’ with MBKS staff yesterday.

The bags would be placed at a distance of about three metres from the next, in hopes of reducing littering, which has sadly become commonplace.

Chan said the approach had worked well in Paris, due to the minimal walking distance for the public to throw their rubbish.

He added that MBKS appointed architects would soon come up with a design to suit the city’s character.

“Hopefully we can see the implementation very soon,” he added.

On the present garbage bins provided, he said they were uneconomical and subject to theft and vandalism.

“People can just take away the bin for their own home usage and this is wrong.”

On the rubbish polluting the Tabuan River, Chan said he welcomed all efforts to find clean up methods.

“If possible, the NGOs (non-governmental organisations) can just come over to see me and work together. It will be my main concern if the NGOs think that MBKS is throwing down the towel and not responding to the issue.

“This is something that I find it difficult to accept as MBKS always welcomes good ideas to all good things for the city,” he said.

In his speech to the some 100 MKBS staff at the session, Chan praised them for their tireless efforts in beautifying and maintaining the cleanliness of the city.

“The community under MBKS now has realised the importance of MBKS existence in their area now and positive feedback has been received due to their integrity and trustworthiness.”

During the session, Chan also announced that the council won the first runner-up prize for the inter-division best booth award competition during Sejiwa Senada last month.

MBKS won RM750 in cash and a trophy.
