Ministry orders recall of DEHP contaminated food products

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has ordered Delitea Sdn Bhd to recall two products imported from Taiwan suspected to be contaminated with diethylhexy phthalate (DEHP).

Its director-general, Datuk Dr Hassan Abdul Rahman said on June 8, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had informed that the two products, Strawberry Pudding Powder and Strawberry Pudding, which were manufactured by Signwin Food Enterprise, Taiwan, were suspected to be contaminated with DEHP.

“The Health Ministry has ordered the company, Delitea Sdn Bhd, to recall the two products immediately and the sample of the food products taken for analysis of their DEHP contents.

“The products will only be released if the analysis shows they are not contaminated with DEHP,” he said in a statement here yesterday. In this regard the ministry has advised consumers not to consume the products until the results are known.

Meanwhile, Dr Hassan said the ministry had confirmed six food products from Taiwan, earlier suspected of being contaminated, were found to be free from DEHP.

He said the food products, one of which were imported from Cocon Food Industries Sdn Bhd namely Jelly Powder and five other products from Ho Chuan Trading comprising Coconut Ice, Frozen Cofee, Honey Alovera, Mango, Kumquat, Peace Juice and jelly were deemed safe for consumption.

Dr Hassan also said only one of the two products of Cosway (M) Sdn Bhd which was analysed, contained DEHP.

Following this the ministry has ordered the company to destroy Oriyen Nutri Grow (Boy) Orange Drink Premix, 330g product(code : 36135) while the Oriyen Nutri Grow (Girl) Cranberry Drink Premix, 330g product (Code : 36136) is safe to be used.

“For consumers who were earlier using the product concerned (Oriyen Nutri Grow (Boy) Orange Drink Premix, 330g (code : 36135), the ministry advises them not to worry as it poses low risk to the health,” he said.

He also advised the public not to be concerned on the safety of the food imported from Taiwan in view of the control imposed on the foodstuff imported from that country.
