KUCHING: Malaysia’s top steel manufacturer BlueScope Steel has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) in Kuala Lumpur yesterday to support PAM’s continuous effort in encouraging architecture and design excellence.

The signing of the MoU provides a platform for better collaboration between the two parties despite being accolades through BlueScope Steel’s support and active participation with PAM activities for almost a decade.

BlueScope Steel Malaysia is a subsidiary of BlueScope Steel Limited, Australia’s biggest manufacturer of steel products and the world’s biggest manufacturer of pre-engineered steel building (PEB) products.

Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei BlueScope Steel president Somkiat Pintatham said his company thinks highly of architects as they are the “guardians of heritages and architecture” as well as the “creators of future heritage”.

“Our commitment to the architects is by supporting their work with our reliable and quality products and by expanding our knowledge on green and sustainable designs.

“The MoU with PAM shows BlueScope’s long-term commitment in providing continuous support and products,” said Pintatham.

PAM president Ar Boon Che Wee was delighted with BlueScope Steel’s support in the Malaysian architecture development in green and sustainable design.

“I am delighted to know that BlueScope Steel is proactively supporting PAM’s effort in lifting Malaysia’s architecture standards, especially in green and sustainable design,” he said in a statement yesterday.

As one of the world’s steel conglomerates, BlueScope Steel Malaysia aims to utilise its global network to attract international experts to share their knowledge and expertise in current architecture development with the local architects and students. Other activities that were still under talks include designing contest, talk sessions and steel designing award.

Until today, BlueScope Malaysia has been actively involved with PAM in Continuous Professional Development seminar, biannual art festival and architectural exhibition.

“Our company has supported PAM International Architectural Design Conference since its commencement in 2003. This July, our company will be sponsoring the conference in Kuala Lumpur for the ninth year in a row,” Pintatham added.

The conference is a part of DATUM: KL – Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival 2011 which will involve BlueScope Steel as the main partner. The festival includes forums, workshops, visits, exhibitions and the popular exhibition.
