KOTA KINABALU: Five people, including three ex-convicts and drug addicts, were arrested by police for breaking into a container accommodation at an open field at Taman Khidmat in Bukit Padang, Luyang.

City police chief ACP Ahmad Sofi Zakaria said the incident occurred between June 11 and 12, when the 27-year-old complainant, who is also the caretaker of the area, and his family had returned to their village for the Harvest Festival celebration.

“The complainant discovered the break-in upon returning from his village,” said Sofi at a press conference at the city police headquarters in Karamunsing here yesterday.

“Investigation revealed that the suspects had broken into the container accommodation through a window before stealing a refrigerator, two television sets, four handphones, a set of sound system, four grasscutters and numerous household items worth RM10,000,” he said.

Acting on the report and investigation, police raided a house at Kampung Sukang in Luyang and detained five people who were believed to have been involved in the break-in.

“Three of the five suspects are ex-convicts with house breaking and drug offence records while the preliminary urine sample tests showed that four of the suspects are drug addicts,” said Sofi, adding that they would be investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code.

Some stolen items have been recovered while police are still investigating into the cases of the remaining items, he said.
