Head of State urges elected representatives to visit their constituencies often

KUCHING: Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin has urged all DUN members to make regular visits to their respective constituencies and interact with the rakyat more.

“The people place high hopes on the commitment and capability of the representatives to advocate their rights and to ensure development in the future that has become more challenging,” he
said during the official opening ceremony of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here yesterday.

Salahuddin also reminded members of the august house to always maintain decorum and discipline during the sitting.

“The democracy that is practised in this country is not a basis for DUN members to raise sensitive issues and racist sentiments that could threaten harmony and integration,” he said.

On the issue of development, the Head of State advised the people to be smart in tackling price hikes by spending moderately, following the global rise of petrol prices.

He was however confident that proactive measures taken by the state government would help the people mitigate the impact of the rising prices.

Touching on Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), Salahuddin expressed his satisfaction on the development of the mega project.

“The state government has succeeded in creating the infrastructure and facilities to fulfil the needs of investors.

“The development has opened the investment potential in the rural areas through commercial agriculture, cottage industry and tourism,” he said.

At the same time, he reminded that the development of human capital must never be overlooked but must be strengthened from preschool until university level.

On the 1Malaysia concept, Salahuddin believed that it was the best approach to foster national integration among people of different races, religions and cultures even though the idea had long been in practice among Sarawakians.

The DUN sitting began yesterday and will end on June 29.
