SIBU: The ‘yi jiao’ (one cent) bank note issued by the People’s Bank of China dated Sept 1, 1966 is worth a brand new Proton Saga car.
“That is how much the currency note is valued now,” said Sarawak Philatelic and Numismatic Society (SPNS) president John Goh Cheong Huat.
He told a press conference here yesterday that the People’s Bank of China had issued six types of the one-cent currency notes since 1960.
“The note that was issued on Sept 1, 1966 is worth a new Proton Saga,” he reiterated.
According to Goh, the use of the note was recalled from China’s market 14 months after its issuance on Sept 1, 1966.
The short period of usage, he said, had contributed to the increase of its value.
Another item he mentioned was the special edition 100-yuan bank note also issued by the People’s Bank of China in 2000 to mark the celebration of the new millennium.
Goh said the note was produced in pair.
“Now the value of a pair of the note can fetch up to RM8,000 and it is expected to go higher next year,” he said.
“It is because next year is the Dragon Year according to the Chinese calendar.
“The note has a dragon printed on one side,” he said.
Goh also announced during the press conference that SPNS would organise an exhibition at Delta Mall here from July 1 to 3.
