THE completion of Cell No. 3 at the Sibuti Sanitary Landfill site is set to end the landfill pollution that had contaminated rivers and emitted a putrid smell detected in nearby villages. Environment Assistant Minister Datuk Peter Nansian said this in response to a question raised by Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat during the question-and-answer session at the DUN sitting yesterday.

“Also, Miri City Council had obtained approval from the federal government through the Ministry of Housing and Local Authorities to implement a few proposed projects for the long-term.

“The proposed projects are the construction of Cell No. 4 (6m x 220m x 260m) and the upgrading works for the ‘leachate’ water treatment plant. This plant is capable of treating leachate up to the level of ‘Effluent Standard A’ under the regulations of Environmental Quality Act 1974,” he said. Meanwhile, Nansian said there is no immediate plan to move the Sibuti sanitary landfill site.

The landfill in question is jointly used by Miri City Council, Subis District Council and part shared with Marudi District Council.
