KUCHING: Refuse collection service contractors that failed to carry out their duties as specified in their service contracts will be imposed a penalty of RM300 per day.

“In this regard, the contractor for the housing estates in Bintangor had been penalised a sum of RM1,200 for failure to collect the refuse on May 4, 5, 12 and 20,” said Environment and Public Health (Rural District Council) Assistant Minister Datuk John Sikie Tayai yesterday.

In response to Meradong assemblywoman Ting Tze Fui’s question on what measures the state government are taking to ensure and improve the overall environmental hygiene in her constituency, Sikie said the Meradong and Julau district councils will continue to enforce the relevant public health laws to ensure that the environment is in good health.

“On May 23, the Meradong and Julau district councils called for a meeting with the contractors to discuss on how to improve refuse collections and to ensure compliance with the terms and conditions in the contract.

“The Public Health section will continue to monitor the refuse collection by the contractor very closely,” said the Kakus assemblyman.

The collection and disposal of refuse in the Meradong district was awarded to Belemba General Services of Kuching.
