KUCHING: A golf tournament will be organised here together with the National Singles and Pairs Bowling Championship Sarawak this October.

Malaysian Lawn Bowls Association (Malba) president Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid who is also chairman of the Professional Golf Association of Malaysia, said the events would help strengthen ties between the local golfing and lawn bowling fraternities.

“The Sarawak government has already given the nod for a Professional Golf Association of Malaysia tournament to be held here,” he announced during the welcoming dinner for players and officials of the Piala P Ramlee Lawn Bowls Championship at KGS Chinese Restaurant on Tuesday.

Ahmad Sarji also thanked the state government for continuing to support Malba and Sarawak Lawn Bowls Association (Salba) in promoting lawn bowls in Sarawak.

Malba will initially look for potential players in Sarawak to represent Malaysia in the World Lawn Bowls Championship in Adelaide, Australia, by end of the year. The National Singles and Pairs Bowling Championship Sarawak will select the players for the national squad.

Meanwhile, two journalists received the Salba Media Award for the coverage of lawn bowls. They are Ting Tieng Hee from The Borneo Post and Faizal Bujang from Utusan Sarawak who each received a trophy, a Polo Club watch and RM300.

Also present at the dinner themed “Malam Nostalgia Legenda P Ramlee” was Salba president Awang Mahyan Awang Mohamed and vice president Poniman Bejok.
