‘Bottom-up approach to regain Sukma prowess’

MIRI: Schools should expand beyond their repertoire of their traditional sports and games by venturing into new one to help the state aspiration to regain its prowess as Sukma power house.

This bottom-up approach is needed to create greater depth of athletic talents in the state, said Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

Speaking in a press conference after having a dialogue session with Education Office of Miri yesterday, Lee is calling them to set a clear focus by exploring new sport competing events in Sukma.

“During the last Sukma, there were a number of new sport competing events which is totally new to us in the state.

“In view of that, I think there is a need for us to venture into the new sport events perhaps to producing new talented athletes in this area,” he remarked.

Among the new sport events for example like Kabaddi, Samba, Fencing, Softball, Water Polo and many others.

At the same times, he urged the Education Office of Miri through its School Sport Council (MSSS) to work closely with school management on the effort to uplift the sport quality in the city. Such continuous effort is needed as Miri has successfully in producing a number of state and national level athletes.

Positive response from the school management is vital for the success implementation of Ministry Education’s current programme “One Student, One Sport”.

Thus, he said further total commitment from the school management will help to make the aspiration a real achieved.

He optimistic that such effort will help the State Sport Council (MNS) to transform Sarawak into a sport power house by year 2020.

In view of that, effort to turn Sarawak into sport power house should start at junior school level.

The primary school management should in every effort to nurture the sport talent among the pupil starting from early age.

Later at the same function, Lee presented a total of grant under Minor Rural Project (MRP) allocation worth RM10,000 to School Sport Council of Miri.

Lee said the grant is means to support the sport programme implemented by the sport council.
