MIRI: The 1Student 1Sports (1Murid 1Sukan or 1M1S) policy introduced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) aims to produce balanced individuals as valuable human resources for the country.

The 1Student 1Sports 1Malaysia Concurrent Run 2011 started at 7.45am yesterday involving all the schools in the country, which was billed as the largest participation of school students in a run for the Malaysia Book of Records.

“The 1M1S policy introduced by the MOE made it compulsory for every student to choose at least one sports to participate in – it underlines the intention of the National Education Philosophy (NEP) to produce balanced individuals in terms of intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects,” said Miri District Education Officer Rosnani Yunus yesterday.

Five schools in the Lambir district of Miri jointly organised the run, which included SMK Taman Tunku, SMK Riam, SK Temenggong Datuk Muip, SK Riam Batu 2 and SJK (C) Chung San.

“The policy is in line with the National Sports Policy to cultivate sports in the community, and must be started in schools through two strategies, that is Sports For All and Sports For Excellence,” said Rosnani who stressed that every student will be actively involved in school sports activities throughout the year.

She explained that the aims include nurturing human capital through wholesome participation amongst students in sports throughout the year, cultivating a sporting culture amongst students so that they become a member of the society with an active, balanced and healthy lifestyle, forming good values and self-discipline and creating a track record towards sporting excellence

The 1M1S is also conceptualised to provide access to all students in obtaining benefits from involvement in sports, especially to the less privileged and less active students and provide opportunity to all students with talents and potentials to be polished to a higher level.

Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat flagged off five groups of runners separately, involving male and female categories of the primary school pupils, secondary school students and an open category in a 1.9km route.

The top winners of the run were Chuah Yong Hong of SJK (C) Chung San (Primary school boys), Ling Hung Er of SJK (C) Chung San (Primary school girls), Neville Tony of SMK Taman Tunku (Secondary school boys), Angela Baun Abell of SMK Taman Tunku (Secondary school girls) and Jamaliah Abd Rahim of SMK Riam (Open).
