Court of Appeal president to go on early retirement

PUTRAJAYA: Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Alauddin Mohd Sheriff is going on early retirement from Aug 6, a year ahead of his mandatory retirement.

Alauddin, who will turn 65 on Aug 7, will begin his leave from today.

The judiciary held a closed-door retirement farewell gathering for him yesterday, at the Banquet Hall of the Palace of Justice which was attended by Chief Justice Tun Zaki Azmi, Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Arifin Zakaria, Federal Court and Court of Appeal judges and staff.

Alauddin was appointed to the judiciary’s number two post on Oct 18, 2008, succeeding Zaki who was appointed chief justice.

He was appointed judicial commissioner on Feb 1, 1992 and elevated to High Court judge, six months later.

He was made Court of Appeal judge in April 2001 and Federal Court judge on July 12, 2004.

He was then appointed chief judge of Malaya on Sept 5, 2007.

Born in Kulim, Kedah, Alauddin read law at the Inner Temple in London.

Alauddin served as a magistrate and sessions court president in Bukit Mertajam, Kangar, Sungai Petani, Kuantan and Taiping between 1971 and 1976.

He was also in the Attorney-General’s Chambers from 1977 to 1980.

He also served as state legal advisor in Johor and Negeri Sembilan and was seconded to Petronas Carigali as secretary-cum-legal advisor.

In June 1989, he was appointed chairman of the advisory board in the Prime Minister’s Department.

Alauddin is married to Puan Sri Munirah Abd Rahman and they have three children. — Bernama
