Manufacturer clears air on butter products

KUCHING: The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) has apparently confirmed that the Golden Churn Creamery Butter products are halal.

A letter dated June 30 allegedly sent by the department to Golden Churn manufacturer Ballantyne stated that porcine DNA was not detected in tests conducted by the Chemistry Department.

It further said that Jakim together with the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) had taken samples of Golden Churn butter directly from the supplier for verification purposes on May 5 which yielded negative results.

“We conclude that the former result of the sample which was taken at Kluang Rail Coffee, Johore was limited to the sample and the batch only and not for other chain of Golden Churn,” the letter said.

A soft copy of the letter was forwarded by an anonymous reader to The Borneo Post on Monday.

Jakim however has yet to give an official statement regarding the halal status of Golden Churn.

Its representative told The Borneo Post yesterday that the department’s personnel were ordered not to comment on the matter until an official statement was made by its director-general or the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.

The confirmation however was already made public by Ballantyne in an advertisement in The Borneo Post on Saturday that said its products contain 100 per cent pure butter.

In the advertisement, the company thanked Jakim for “conducting test to clear misleading information about Golden Churn to contain pork DNA.”
