GEORGE TOWN: The DAP-led Penang government yesterday denied its involvement in a short messaging service (SMS) on the payment of an allowance to participants of the illegal rally named ‘Bersih 2.0’ last week.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state government had never sent out the SMS to anyone and regretted the allegations made.

“The SMS aims to tarnish the Pakatan government, and the state government is most disappointed with the action of the irresponsible group in spreading the SMS,” he told reporters after attending the investiture in conjunction with the 73rd birthday of the Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas, here.

The content of the SMS was: “Saudara-saudara peserta demonstrasi Bersih yang belum terima duit elaun RM300 seorang dijemput datang ambil duit di pejabat Ketua Menteri tingkat 28 Komplek Tun Abdul Razak (Komtar) pada pukul 4 petang ini. Sekretariat telah sediakan RM350 ribu untuk saudara di Pulau Pinang”.

(Participants of the Bersih demonstration who have not received the allowance of RM300 each are invited to collect the money at the office of the Chief Minister on the 28th floor, Komplek Tun Adul Razak (Komtar) at 4pm today. The secretariat has allocated RM350,000 for you in Penang).

Lim said he came to know of the SMS yesterday morning from a member of the State Executive Council who received the SMS from a stranger.

Meanwhile, Lim said the state government would hold a public briefing at the Expo Ground in Seberang Jaya last night aimed at explaining to the people on the plans of the state government. — Bernama
