Canada revises travel advisory to Sabah’s east coast

KOTA KINABALU: Canada has taken down a notch on the travel advisory issued to its citizens heading to the islands off the east coast of Sabah.

Canadian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Randolph Mank, said the revised travel advisory was issued a couple of months ago, as the situation on the ground there, including Sipadan Island where foreigners were kidnapped in the past, had improved.

“Our officials went to Sipadan and found that things have improved, and security in the region has also improved.

“As of now, we have yet to see an increase in tourist arrivals from Canada, especially to Sipadan Island, but over time, things may improve,” he told reporters after a media luncheon here yesterday.

In the past, Sipadan Island has been a popular diving spot for tourists.

On business opportunities in Sabah, Mank said Canada would explore the possibility of bringing in investors to tap the investment potential in oil, gas and tourism sectors.
