Sulawesi volcano erupts, thousands evacuated

TOMOHON, Sulawesi: Over 2,500 people have been evacuated to four shelters when Mountain Lokon in Tomohon, North Sulawesi erupted yesterday.

The eruption at around 10.30pm local time, as high as 1500 metres, spewed ash, sand and other volcanic causing forest fires around the volcano, AFP reported. Another eruption took place at 12.30am.

Fifty-five eruptions took place in the six hours following the first eruption.

There were no reported deaths or injuries from the eruption. – Agencies
