KUCHING: A teenager is lucky to have survived after being struck by lightning while talking on his mobile phone late yesterday afternoon.

The 18-year-old from Petra Jaya was standing outside a surau at Batu Lintang Teacher’s Training College when the incident occurred around 5.40pm.

The teen, a student of the college, was said to be cleaning a wall at the surau while talking on his mobile phone via a hands-free kit when he suddenly fell to the ground after being hit by the bolt of lightning.

Several fellow trainees nearby immediately came to the aid of the victim, who was still conscious, and sent him to the Sarawak General Hospital for treatment.

The victim, who is reportedly in a weak but stable condition, suffered burns to his right ear, as well as light cuts and scrapes to his head from the fall.
