30 schools enter Round 2 of ACCA-Sunway TES Accounting Challenge

KUCHING: Thirty schools from Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia have successfully entered Round 2 of the ACCA-Sunway TES Accounting Challenge 2011 after completing Round 1 challenge recently.

The 30 schools consist of 21 from Peninsular Malaysia and 9 from East Malaysia.

The schools from Peninsular Malaysia entering Round 2 are Pei Hwa High School (Muar), Chong Hwa High School (Kluang), Yong Peng High School, Chong Hwa High School (Batu Pahat), Fong Yew High School (Johor Bahru), Chung Hua High School (Seremban), Chung Hua Middle School (Port Dickson), Tsun Jin High School (Kuala Lumpur), Kuen Cheng High School (Kuala Lumpur), Confucian Private Secondary School (Kuala Lumpur), Chong Hwa Independent High School (Kuala Lumpur) and Hin Hua High School (Klang).

Another eight are Tsung Wah Private Secondary School (Kuala Kangsar), Hua Lian High School (Taiping), Chung Hua Independent High School (Kota Bahru), Sin Min High School (Sungai Petani), Sekolah Menengah Sin Min (Alor Setar), Han Chiang High School (Pulau Pinang), Chung Ling High School (Pulau Pinang) and Sekolah Menegah Foon Yew (Kulai).

While from East Malaysia are Chung Hua Middle School No 1 (Kuching), Chung Hua Middle School No 4 (Kuching), Catholic High School (Sibu), and Kai Dee Middle School (Bintulu).

Participants from Sabah are Sabah Tshung Tshin Secondary School (Kota Kinabalu), Papar Middle School, Tenom Tshung Tshin Secondary School, Lahat Datu Middle School and Yu Yuan Secondary School (Sandakan).

For East Malaysia, the second round and semi final will be held simultaneously at Riverside Majestic Hotel in Kuching on July 16. Round 2 will commence at 9am, while the semi-final is scheduled at 11am.

Guest of honour Datuk Yong Khoon Seng, the Deputy Minister of Works, is expected to close the competition at 1.30pm.

The innovation competition in its third year running is jointly organised by Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Malaysia and Sunway TES Group of Colleges (a subsidiary of Sunway University) for students of Chinese Independent High Schools. Sunway TES executive director Teo Ee Sing was delighted with the magnificent response to this landmark event.

Teo disclosed that the first round of the contest was conducted at the respective participating schools where students had to complete 40 multiple choice questions in 40 minutes.

The Top 3 students with the highest marks were then chosen to form a team to represent their respective schools in Round 2, he added.

For Round 2, participants will be required to complete 40 multiple choice questions in 30 minutes.

The Top 6 teams with the highest aggregate marks will then progress to the semi-final.

The team with the highest total score at the end of the semi-final will be declared the winner.

The winning team from the semi-final in Kuching will then challenge the winning team from the other semi-final in Peninsular Malaysia.

The final will be held at Sunway University, Petaling Jaya on July 30.

The team with the highest marks at the conclusion of the contest will be declared the Grand Prize winner.

The winning team will receive scholarships worth more than RM75,000 to pursue ACCA programme at either Sunway University (if winning team is from Peninsular Malaysia) or Kolej Sunway Kuching (if winning team is from East Malaysia).

They will also pick up a specially crafted challenge trophy for their respective school.

The team that finishes as first runner-up shall receive scholarships worth more than RM37,500 to take up ACCA at either Sunway University or Kolej Sunway Kuching.

Consolation prizes and certificates of participation will be awarded to teams eliminated at either Round 2 stage or semi-final of the competition.
