KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is planning to establish its first biogas composting plant at the Kota Sentosa wet market to ensure that waste generated by the tenants will not be wasted.
Its chairman Lo Khere Chiang told a media conference in Kota Padawan here yesterday that a delegation from the council visited Kuala Lumpur recently to inspect a composting machine being considered for the recycling of waste material from the Kota Sentosa market.
“The interesting thing is that all the waste from the market can be recycled and processed using the composting machine to produce biogas, fertilisers and effective microorganism (EM),” Lo said.
He disclosed that the biogas produced by the plant could be used by the hawkers for cooking while the council will use the fertiliser produced for its landscaping activities.
He said that the use of such recycling technology was in-line with the council’s effort to protect the environment and to go green.
The composting plant in Kota Sentosa market is considered a pioneer project and if found effective it may be expanded to other markets under MPP.
“At the moment most of the wastes produced by the markets will go to the landfill and in our efforts to go green we are thinking of how we can turn this into something useful,” he said.
Among those present at the media conference yesterday were MPP’s deputy chairman Mohammad Hashim Yap and council secretary Michael Saweng.
