Strong earthquake rocks southern Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale has jolted southern Kyrgyzstan on the border with Uzbekistan, the US Geological Survey said today.

China’s Xinhua news agency reported that there were no casualties or serious damages. The earthquake occurred at about 1.35am local time today some 400km from Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake took place 9.2 km underground, around 42 km southwest of Ferghana, a city in the east of Uzbekistan.

The earthquake reportedly lasted up to 15 seconds, and it was not clear if the epicentre of the earthquake was in a populated area. – Bernama
