7 dead in landslides in the Philippines

MANILA: Seven people died from several landslides in the northern Philippine province of Albay as tropical storm Nock-Ten continues to bring heavy rain and floods, Xinhua news agency reported quoting disaster officials as saying today.

The landslides that occurred in the towns of Gabon, Pioduran, Polangui and Basicao killed six people, while one resident of the town of Tiwi died due to electrocution, according to Benito Ramos, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Ramos said massive floods and landslides in the province of Albay displaced over 100,000 people. They have already been evacuated to village halls, chapels and day-care centres.

In a related development, Ramos reported that 14 fishermen went missing after their fishing boat capsized at Balesin island due to strong typhoon. – Bernama
