SOLID SUPPORT FOR INTEC: Taib (centre, front row) with the visitors during a photo call.

KUCHING: The International Engineering Centre (IntEC), which would be set up in Kota Samarahan, might take off within two years’ time, said Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud yesterday.

He told the committee members of the Institution of Engineers Sarawak Branch (IEMSB) that they could count on him for support.

“Maybe IEMSB could also collaborate with Unimas, Sarawak Energy Berhad and other industrial players in SCORE to come up with the best model focusing on their manpower needs and training requirements.”

Taib, who is also IntEC patron, said this when IEMSB committee members paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Menara Pelita here to brief him on the latest development of the IntEC.

The visitors were led by IEMSB chairman Alan Tan Khiok Chun while the briefing was conducted by Zawawi Embong, who is the chairman of the Standing Committee (IntEC Development).

The IntEC, when completed, will form an integral part of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) in terms of human capacity building.

It is understood that the State Government had agreed to allocate a six-acre piece of land to IEMSB for IntEC.

Among those present at the presentation were Unimas vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid, IEM Malaysia vice president Pick Eng Chong and Immediate Past Chairman of IEMSB Dr John Panil and the director of Unimas’ Centre of Excellence of Renewal Energy Dr Azhaili Baharun.
