KUCHING: DBKU commissioner Mohd Atei Abang Medaan’s successor has been identified, but Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud prefers to keep his identity under wraps for now.

He told reporters after launching the International Orchid Show yesterday that the name would only be announced after getting the State Cabinet’s nod.

“I have chosen the man but I have to get blessings from the Cabinet first… then I’ll announce.”

He added that if everything goes well, the new man at the helm would assume duty on Aug 1.

Mohd Atei, who was appointed as DBKU Datuk Bandar on July 27, 2007, retires this Sunday.

DBKU has seen five leaders over the years, starting with Dr Yussoff Hanifah from 1988 to 1994, followed by Datuk Awang Ehsan Joini (1995-2000), Madehi Kolek (2001-2004), Datuk Abdul Hamid Mohd Yusoff (2005-2007) and Mohd Atei.

In his speech at the event, Taib thanked Mohd Atei for his service as DBKU commissioner.

“I would like to thank the commissioner for making areas under DBKU better by the day. He has fulfilled our dream for a garden city,” he said.
