BASIC STRUCTURE DONE: The school building, including hostel, teachers’ quarter and dining hall, has been completed.

MIRI: Construction of Comprehensive 9 (K9) at SK Long Bedian has been completed and is expected to be handed over to the Education Department by the end of the year.

SK Long Bedian headmaster Jenggo Jau Jok said the RM44 million project, the first of its kind in the state, was basically still a bare skeleton at the moment but proper furniture and other fittings would be coming in soon.

He said the K9 concept made the school different from standard schools in that it not only have classes for Primary 1 to Primary 6 but could also conduct Form 1 to Form 3 classes.

“The main idea is to close the education gap between those in the urban and remote areas,” he told The Borneo Post during a visit by Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau recently.

Jenggo added that the new school would be able to accommodate 400 students.

“We are looking forward to the completion of the new school as it would help ensure that students from the rural areas will not be left out of formal education.”

When briefing Dennis on the project, Jenggo said the main source of electricity supply to the school would be via a solar system. SK Long Bedian is believed to be the first school in the country with the biggest solar panel system.

He added that the new school would have an administrative office, nine classrooms, teachers’ quarter, hostel blocks that could accommodate 350 students, a kindergarten, canteen and a football field.

Meanwhile, Dennis praised the project contractor for a job well done.
