Strong earthquake hits Papua New Guinea

PORT MORESBY: A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 hit north coast of New Guinea province in Papua New Guinea on Monday, the US Geological Survey said.

The earthquake occured at about 9.38am local time, the agency said, adding that no tsunami warning had been issued.

The agency said the earthquake struck at 701km northwest of the national capital Port Moresby.

China’s Xinhua news agency reported that there is no report of casualties or damages. – Bernama
